Overview

The word pathology is derived from two Greek words - "pathos" meaning suffering and "logos" meaning study. Pathology is thus scientific study of structure and function of body in disease. Pathologists are the diagnosticians of disease. Therefore knowledge and understanding of pathology is essential for all the would be doctors. This subject is taught during second year of M.B.B.S. Pathology department runs a laboratory at GMERS Medical College Hospital Valsad that functions for 24 hours on all the days of week. Services provided by this laboratory are as follows:

• Hematological investigations (CBC, ESR, PS, sickeling test, BT, CT, PT etc.)
• Cytopathological investigations ( FNAC, fluid cytology, pap smear)
• Histopathological investigations
• Biochemical investigations (blood sugar, RFT, LFT etc)
• Serological investigations (Widal, VDRL, HIV, CRP, ASO titre, lepto check, dengue check etc)
• Clinical chemistry investigations (urine examination, body fluid examination, serum examination, stool examination)
• Department has also intended to provide blood bank services like blood grouping, providing whole blood, PCV, organizing blood donation camp etc

Facilities

The department is involved in providing diagnostics services in clinical Hematology, Cytopathology, Histopathology and clinical Pathology for the patients attending the Hospital.

A state of art of Blood Bank with facilities for collecting from suitable donors screening collected blood for various infected disease before labeling it for suitable transfusions and proper storage and cross matching with the prospective recipients.

The services are to be augmented by adding component unit in the Blood Bank. The Blood Bank is duly licensed by the regularly authorized the department is also involved in conducting in research projects of significance to the local populations at large.
